My First Music Video!

This Sunday at my church we are starting a two month Family Sunday School class, and it will be my first Sunday using a new curriculum called 252 Basics, based on Luke 2:52 (Jesus grew in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man). Anyway, I won’t get into that here, but to say that it is a ‘virtue based’ curriculum and each month will focus on a new “virtue” with July being “HUMILITY.” The curriculum provides some very modern and up to date music as well, and a theme song for each month. The song for Humility is actually pretty cool – I think the kids will like it, almost sounds like Hillary Duff. Anyway, I took about 30 minutes tonight at church to film some puppets singing it, and forced myself to stick to one take. (Otherwise I would spend four hours filming and increase my editing time as well!) Editing took a few hours more, but in the end, here is my FIRST MUSIC VIDEO:

With or Without Me (9.6MB QuickTime)

AND THE LYRICS, which are pretty good:

Which is why only small web version being postedVERSE 1
Guess what? I got a newsflash
And I feel like I’m gonna crash and fall
‘Cause I am not the center of it all.

I thought I was a big shot
But I don’t always have to be the best
Sometimes I just forget about the rest.

I need to be reminded that
I’m small in the grander scheme of things
I guess I’ll try humility

CHORUS
The world keeps spinnin’ around
’Round and ’round and it seems to do quite nicely
‘Cause it’s not about me
Each day the sun comes around
Goes up and down, it always does so faithfully
And that’s how it’s gonna be
With or without me

VERSE 2
It’s tough for me to say this
’Cause I never believed that it was true
But I’m really good at runnin’ over you

I’m caught and I’ll admit it
Consideration wasn’t even close
‘Cause I am what’s concerning me the most

I need to be reminded that
I’m small on the larger scale of life
I think I’ll have some humble pie

CHORUS
The world keeps spinnin’ around
’Round and ’round and it seems to do quite nicely
‘Cause it’s not about me
Each day the sun comes around
Goes up and down, it always does so faithfully
And that’s how it’s gonna be
With or without me

BRIDGE
I tried to steal the stage, I know
I want to make you notice me
I tried to steal the stage, but oh
Now I see, now I see, now I see, now I see

CHORUS
The world keeps spinnin’ around
’Round and ’round and it seems to do quite nicely
‘Cause it’s not about me
Each day the sun comes around
Goes up and down, it always does so faithfully
And that’s how it’s gonna be
With or without me

  2. Karl-
It looks like fun! How’d the class go? I like a lot of what 252 offers and I especially like the “shared” experience emphasis. We are looking at starting this in Sept. o rin January an any feedback you have would be appreciated!!

  3. fun! did you do this in imovie?

  4. iMovie? uBet! It is an awesome thing to work with iMovie. So many effects, so few minutes of video. :)

  5. (tongue in cheek)—- so does iMovie come for Windows XP? he he
    very kewl editing…

one thing I noticed (you don’t have to listen to me) was that you seemed to transition really quickly… as in going from one color saturation to another to sepia to black and white…. it would probably be more visually cleaner to give more time to each effect, and maybe limit the effects to use… maybe use one or two effects off and on… JMO…

  6. I just re-read where you said this is your first one… and it was 4AM when you put it up…. let me clearly say that in the last comment I was really only trying to give you a pointer… not trying to criticize or complain… the video was really kewl….

  7. WAAAAA! IM NEVER MAKING ANOTHER VIDEO!!!!

Paul – you are right – no prob, good pointer. You are right, I used no transitions, only effects. iMove has amazing and fun transitions, but add time between the scenes and I didn’t want to mess with lips syncing after fractions of time were added! ahhhhh And not only was it 4am, but this was indeed a rush job. We are kickin’ off our family sunday school class this sunday, and i wanted to whip one out to show. This fall (when we continue the 252 Basics in Kids Church) i plan to make a music video for each month with the theme song using my kids crew to film different scenes and angles etc. It will be fun. Because this was just me with two puppets in one take and no moving camera, i went a little nuts on the effects to attempt to make it cooler than just watching two puppets sing. It was HARD not to refilm as I got tons of ideas immediately after a section of what i coulda shoulda woulda done….

more to come another time. :) but i am open to pointers any time!!!

  8. Wow, that was really cool! I’d love to do something like that. Thanks for sparking my imagination!
