When Being Is Enough
A Reflection on Gratitude, Grace, and the Quiet Joy of Simply Being God’s Child
Before the world begins to call,
Before the duties rise,
I sit in silence with my God,
Beneath His endless skies.
No list of things I need to do,
No goals I must achieve,
Just quiet moments with the One
In whom I rest, believe.
The mountains do not hurry,
The rivers do not race,
The forests never question
Their purpose or their place.
The flowers do not struggle
To prove that they belong,
The birds don’t earn their morning,
Yet greet it with a song.
The cliffs of ancient Yosemite
Stand faithful through the years,
Untroubled by tomorrow’s storms,
Unburdened by their fears.
And here am I, forever planning,
With dreams that never cease,
While all creation whispers,
Be still, and know My peace.
I’ve spent my life creating,
With more ideas than time,
Yet none of my achievements
Could make Your love more mine.
Before I built a ministry,
Before I taught or led,
You knew the little boy I was
And loved me even then.
I am not what I’ve accomplished,
Nor the things I’ve yet to do,
My worth is not in what I make,
But that I belong to You.
The work I do may matter,
The seeds I sow may grow,
But I need not see the harvest
For Your faithfulness to show.
So let me love the people
You’ve placed along my way,
And not postpone life’s blessings
For some more perfect day.
Let laughter fill the ordinary,
Let gratitude replace
The restless need for something more
Than Your sufficient grace.
Teach me to see the sunrise
As more than morning light,
And every breath a precious gift
That makes this moment bright.
Let me ride beside the waters,
Where the cottonwoods stand tall,
And hear within their silence
The gentle Lord of all.
For I was made for more than work,
For more than plans and striving;
I was made to walk with You,
And find my joy in living.
And when my race is finished,
And earthly labors cease,
May I look back with grateful joy,
Not merely sweet release.
For I will leave behind my work,
My titles and my name,
But what I am in Jesus Christ
Will always stay the same.
So today I’ll stop and listen,
Let tomorrow wait awhile;
I’ll sit beneath my Father’s sky
And rest beneath His smile.
I need not do another thing
To earn the love You give.
For being Yours is more than enough—
And what a way to live.
