Kidmin Covenant #1: The Priority of Prayer

As a children’s ministry leader, I recognize the incredible privilege and responsibility of shaping young hearts for Jesus. I cannot do this in my own strength. That’s why I commit to a daily walk with God that fuels both my personal life and public ministry. This covenant outlines the values and habits I strive to live by—rooted in Scripture, empowered by grace, and aimed at pleasing the Lord above all. My desire is to be inwardly healthy so that I can be outwardly fruitful. These 12 commitments are intentional choices to keep my heart soft, my hands diligent, and my focus faithful to Christ.

Covenant Commitment #1:

I will start each day in prayer—first for my own walk with God, then for my family, and finally for my ministry.

Before we answer to anyone else—our boss, our team, the parents, or even the kids—we must remember who we ultimately serve: the Lord. We aren’t just clocking in for another day of tasks. We are ambassadors of the King.

That’s why how we start our day matters so much.

Before the emails, before the texts, before the prep—we pray. Not out of duty, but because prayer re-centers us. It reminds us of who we are and whose we are. It’s our daily declaration: “I’m not in control—God is.”

If you’re physically able, I encourage you to kneel when you pray. There’s something about that posture that shifts the heart. It humbles us. It slows us down. It reminds us we are not just doing our job—we are stepping into a calling.

Jesus Himself modeled this rhythm. “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” (Mark 1:35) If the Son of God needed that connection with the Father, how much more do we?

Philippians 4:6 reminds us not to be anxious about anything, but to bring everything to God in prayer. That means we don’t just start our day with prayer—we sustain it with prayer. Pause throughout the day. When you hit a challenge, pray. When you’re discouraged, pray. When you see a win or a child lights up with joy, thank God in that moment. This ongoing connection with God is what will keep you spiritually focused and emotionally grounded.

Paul said simply, “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17) That doesn’t mean you lock yourself in a prayer closet all day—it means you carry your connection with God like a walkie-talkie on your belt. He’s always there. Just talk to Him.

Never underestimate the power of starting your day in prayer—and then returning to prayer again and again throughout. It’s not just a habit; it’s a lifeline. It strengthens your spirit, centers your heart, and builds spiritual resistance to discouragement and distraction. It keeps your heart anchored in truth no matter what the day throws your way.

So tomorrow morning, before your feet even hit the floor—or better yet, after they hit the floor and you kneel—start with prayer. For your walk. For your family. For your ministry. And watch how it changes your day.
