Dad, I Need to Talk

For my birthday I got this cool home marquee sign so I can put light up signs in my office. I had a message that said, “WELCOME TO THE KIDOLOGY HQ.”

My son came down yesterday while I was busy working and asked if I minded if he played with it and changed the message. I said, “Go for it!” and showed him where all the letters were. A few minutes later he says it is ready for viewing. This is what I saw:

Wow! Kids have a way of getting our attention. So I sat down, put my arm around him and asked, “Well, what do you want to talk about?” (Wondering if it was serious or something had happened at school.) He answered, “I need to tell you in a note. I’ll be right back!” and he ran upstairs. I thought perhaps he didn’t want to say what was on his mind with house guests around.

He soon returned back downstairs with the following note. I was relieved it was nothing serious. (I can post-pone “the Talk” another day!)

You are going to have to come with me out frint there is something I want to do with you after dinner, I hope you know what i’m talking about from the picter.

PS it will be fun.

He needed some play time! I said, “of course” and then he ran off again. Soon he was back with the “Rules”

You are going to play tackle football, You will need to wear a foot ball gerse, and if you have one a football hat or helmet, Play rules, you can only tackle from the legs arms and body, you mau not go on the sidewalk to make a touchdown because that would be out of bonds and you may not jump or duck under people you may only go side to side. These are the touch downs (see illustration of our yard.)

I love that when my son needs to talk (or play) he doesn’t hesitate to let me know. As much as possible I try to immediately drop what I am doing so he sees that he is the priority in my life. I know all too soon, I’ll be asking him for time to talk or play. But while the Cats in the Cradle I want to make every day start.

Did you know that your Heavenly Father feels the same? He is eager and ready and waiting for you to ask Him for time to Talk (or play).

If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! Matthew 7:11

Spend some time with your Dad (Abba Father) today. He’ll always make time for you!

2 Comments:

  1. So cute! You are right Karl. Speaking from my youngest being 18 it goes by too fast!

  2. How precious! I LOVE this. God bless you for stopping your work to do the most important job of all – being a dad. You won’t regret it! I promise. I watch my husband now with our four grown sons and the relationship they have. They text, call and email him for advice, prayers, sports updates, and just for fun. While we miss terribly those years when they were young and at home, we are so proud of the men of God they have become and it happened because their dad showed them their heavenly father.
