An Awesome Adventure with Parents

How do you make sure your kids know the BASICS of the Christian Faith? At our church, we offer a course for kids to take with a parent. It’s called the Awesome Adventure Small Group and it’s for 4-6th graders but they must attend with a parent. It’s a twelve week class because there are 12 lessons in the Awesome Adventure Guide that my wife and I wrote. It covers topics from Salvation through how to read your Bible and Pray through how to discover your Spiritual Gifts. Kids memorize Scripture each week and quiz each other (tested by a non-family member!) and earn points for attendance, bringing their Bible, knowing the verse and get BONUS POINTS when mom and/or dad know the verse too! But it’s not all hard work – they play some games too because forming and growing relationships is also a part of discipleship. Like this game where they were dropping gold fish crackers into their parents mouths! In our busy world, we need to help families carve out time to discuss spiritual things. That why I create Family Table Talkers every month to help families be more strategic at their meal times. I also try…

How to Start a School from SCRATCH!

Concerned about the direction of public schools? Looking to team up with other home school families? Contemplating starting a school on the mission field? Don’t know where to start? Everyone knows the Great Commission which compels us to go into all the world and share the Gospel. What is often forgotten is the second half of that commission, the educational mandate, “teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20a) Yes, we need to reach the lost, and Doug Crowder has been on the front lines of mission work for his entire ministry, but he also understands the need to disciple those who come to Jesus so they can grow and get to the work of the Kingdom. It is critical that we do everything we can to not only teach the Bible, but to do so in a way that transforms lives. In Nehemiah 8:8, we read, “They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read.” But what do you do when there is a need for biblical education and the schools available to help evangelize and educate the…

KidCheck Introduces Roster Check-In

You will LOVE Roster Check-in! Why? When I was over both kids and youth for a season while our church was looking for a youth pastor, I quickly recognized that our youth ministry was not as secure as the kids’ ministry. Teens were coming and going and guests were not being registered. I was worried that a parent was going to show up asking where their child was and I would end up responding with a dumb look on my face. Knowing teens will be teens, I was worried that youth group could be used by a savvy kid as a way to be out and about while parents thought they were at church! I decided that wasn’t going to happen on my watch! But putting stickers on teenagers wasn’t exactly a realistic option! There was no way I was going to get the “cool kids” to put name tags on or get parents to come in a use a sticker code check to pick up their kids. Teens are old enough to leave when we dismiss, and many of them drive. But I still wanted accurate attendance and registration. How delighted I was to discover that, as usual, KidCheck…

Why Your Kid NEEDS a Comic Book Bible!

As a Children’s Pastor, I am often asked what Bible parents should get to their children, and often they looked surprised when I answer, “a comic book Bible.” Yes, kids need a REAL Bible, where they can look up Scripture and read the Word of God, but don’t under-estimate the power and educational value of a comic book Bible. I know personally the VALUE of a comic book Bible. My parents got me The Picture Bible back when I was 9 years old. I still have it. It has packing tape holding it together, and you’ll notice they had my name engraved on the cover: This is the original Picture Bible published by David C. Cook back in 1978: 1978! One year after Star Wars exploded on the American scene, the Picture Bible became my favorite book. I read it over and over. When the pastor started preaching, I tried to find the passage in my Bible, or at least the closest story to wherever he was in the Bible. My comic book Bible brought the stories of the Bible to life and helped me visualize them. Here is just one example of the great story of Elijah calling down…
